Persistence, Not Perfection, Brings Success

You know how you know you’ve got a good idea? It’s when you realize how much work it’s taking to get off the ground. So many business owners seem to think that you have a good idea, give it a name, put out a sign, and… BAM! you’ve got a profitable business. Nothing could be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, we know a few people that were able to build profits overnight. Know what they say now? If they had have known how limited their businesses were going to be by growing too fast, they would have slowed down the process on their own. The thing is, really good ideas and great sustainable businesses usually take a while to catch on. Our society is so caught up in the “what makes them feel good right now syndrome” that things they actually need and that can help them for the long term, are the last things on their radar. But, when they take notice, you’re golden.

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve given up before. I’ve given up and I’ve had to smack myself for it. See, I didn’t realize it but, I was carrying around this notion that I wasn’t good enough or didn’t deserve to be successful for some reason. So, instead of fighting for it, I walked away at the first insult, the first obstacle, the first naysayer, or whatever first negative entered my space. Over 6 years, I owned 4 companies. Think about it, which one do you think had an actual chance to be successful before I gave up? The brutally honest part of this though is that it was usually somethin’ related to other people that caused me to back up. Not this time.

Do yourself a favour and take this short quiz:

  1. Do you know someone that says they support you but never shows up to your events or never uses or refers your products or services?
  2. Have you ever been made to feel insignificant because the person across the table doesn’t get “it”, you, or what you’re accomplishing?
  3. has anyone ever said something like, “Oh, so that’s what you’re doing now?”, or “I see what you’re doing it’s just that I don’t have a need for it”. How about, “Are you sure that’s the best way to do that?”.

Here is a very simple solution to all your above problems. It’s a little trick I learned from the great Mentor and Business Coach, Colin Sprake. Write down all the answers and then across the answers, use Sharpie if you can find one, write WHO CARES!!! Bottom line is, nothing is perfect. You won’t please all the people all the time but, that doesn’t mean you should give up.

If you know people like this, walk away from THEM, not your business. Go and find the right people to engage with. The ones that will support you, will see your vision, help you achieve your goals, and encourage you even when times are tough.
